MONDAY AUGUST 21st
================
I Woke up at 5am. Sunny day. Ahead of the setting on Simon’s watch. Had i been late heard Scott’s alarm at 6.40am. I was Duty officer today. Got flag up right this year. Breakfasted on scrambled egg, toast and bacon. Ged led “Thought for the day” thankful for 2 groups of people at camp, the Food People and the Loos People. Darren had a good long sleep in counteracting his fever and viral skin rash. Dan complained of feeling ill. More likely overtired. Tent 2 did a good job at fatigues with good humour. 4 adults and 4 boys went mountain bike riding including
Andy Willitt with Elaine Robertson in charge but she fell off her bike into a clump of stinging nettles and got well stung up the thigh. Word reached Ged by mobile phone and he sped off in a mini bus with Andy and Emma and rescued her and took her to hospital.
Malcolm kept complaining about Tuck Shop prices. particularly frogs, the I found that I had printed Frogs off twice from the computer. Then he was complaining about the Appeal so we put up a notice “FOR MALCOLM’S MOTOR BIKE SO HE CAN TRANSFER TO INDONESIA” Then he said that he was leaving camp (but wanted to come back). Rev. Ron Frost who was chaplain here last week called to pick up his car but reckoned that the batteries were flat and had less than an hour to catch the 12 noon ferry. Alan and Geoff went to his aid and he left with 40 minutes to spare so should have been OK.
Ged and company returned but reported long tailbacks on the Sandown road to Shanklin. The beach party returned safely with the dingy and the cyclists returned OK. Everyone was back for lunch except the seniors and Simon, Colin, Kathryn T, and Kathryn P who stayed at Ryde until early evening. The Kitchener, Pearce, A Turner and Robertson families went to Godshill to visit the Model village where Bethany went knocking on doors. . The cooks, Andy Willitt and I stayed at camp and closed the gate.
Everyone else went to Ryde Ten Pin Bowling and boating, Mike and Lynda went off somewhere by car, The cooks and Andy went for a walk leaving me in sole charge. When they returned they had a snout around the caravans for sale at the top of the field and Lynda Turner have arrived back thought they were strangers and that it was not right they should be in our field, especially when they headed in our direction.
Euan and his Dad had bought a kite and then got ticked off for flying it on site as it infringed the aviation regulations as we were near the Bembridge airport. Dr Pearce has dealt with 20 patients so far. Ben and Barney went peddle boating. Evening activities including Pudducks.
Scores were .
Andy Turner’s team 1st innings 49 2nd innings 29 Total 78.

Mike read to us letters of greeting from Battalion Secretary Doug Irish and from Elaine Webb. Boys played a lot of Chess and cheat.
At Evening Prayers Malcolm spoke about H for a Happy heart.
Boys being tired went off to sleep pretty quick. Tent Two spent a fair bit of time in audible prayer intercession for various people including their families and the families and victims of the Russian submarine disaster. I stayed up late with a cup of tea with Malcolm.
TUESDAY. AUGUST 22nd 2000 CAMP
=========================
Emma was charge today. Sunny day. Mervyn the mole has been doing a lot of tunnelling in our tent. Kit inspection was outside to air the soil. Fried Sausage and tomato for breakfast.
Colin and Simon played Rat Race, a long time since I’ve seen it played at Camp. We played it a lot in 1981. For lunch we had chicken, stuffing, potatoes, carrots rhubarb crumble with ice cream. There was loud applause for the cooks labouring under stifling hot conditions.
After lunch “It’s a Knockout” events took place. Welly competition, sack races, 3-legged races, boys challenging staff at water throwing, only James was properly attired for this event in leggings and waterproofed jacket. Even Andy Willitt got wet. The fishermen went forth upon the briny including Euan. Several people played CHEAT the card game introduced by Malcolm our chaplain. 14 went over to Brown’s course at Sandown to play putting. Best score was Stephen with 64, and highest was Barnaby on 99..
The fishermen reported huge waves, tossing the boat about. James helped to maintain tranquillity by singing “Septimus the spider” Nigel caught 6 fish and David none. Rosemary completed reading her Harry Potter book. We had a salad supper with chicken along with jam sandwiches and cake. Prayer Time focused upon an angry heart and the need for a change of heart and Psalm 139.
Mike Lynda, me and others took a group of boys on an after dark walk up to the monument to see the lights. We had to walk through a small herd of cows at the foot of the monument disturbing their sleep. We shone our torches up the monument to illumine it and indicate to the camp that we had arrived and then sent torch messages to the camp and received replies. Although it is debatable whether we understood one another. We could see the lights of Bembridge, St Helens, Southampton, Sandown and Shanklin. Barnaby Linscott took some photographs.
Returning to camp we found intruders had entered the tuck shop, 3 female forms, two dressed up to look like mummies (Egyptian not maternal) with Simon and Colin on guard outside. “ I don’t understand how the CO and the chaplain brought up their daughters but...”
WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 23rd
===================
Most of the officers were up late. Including Simon, AWT, Colin and the C.O. so most of us washed after the boys. Lovely sunny day.
Emma has lost her voice. Tent inspection was No 1 88% No 2 79% No 3 85%
Andrew Turner led morning “Thought for the Day”. He reminded us that young men have a sought of fetish for being strong, healthy, fit, he pointed out how one young man in our midst was like that and excelled at football, but that he, Darren has been laid low this week by illness and had needed rest to renew his strength.
He told us about Keiran and how he had demonstrated great courage when some of Company Section had been walking on Kinder Scout earlier in the year. Scrambling to get down he got involved in a fall of rocks, he had to run to try to keep his balance and then he fell over and rolled over and over the rocks down the hill , and then got up and walked away and was OK. God gives us strength to endure and gives power to the weak. Ask Him and he will give us what we need.
Most of us spent much of the day at Black Gang Chine. The 12-14’s found it rather boring as there was little to do. The Seniors seemed OK. The Big water slide was a great hit with people queued up 40 minutes for a 60 second thrill. Kevin, Keiran, Matt, Darren and Stephen went on twice, as did several others. I with Andy Willitt had a go but ended up sitting in a shelter surrounded with hoards of haversacks where I finished writing my postcards.
Ryan exchanged addresses with 3 fine slim young ladies who live on the Island. David appeared to want to cash in on the arrangement. (Teenage hormones were racing again.)
On the minibus Darren, Barnaby, Matt and Scott were discussing the merits of baptism and when it would be best to have it done.
Coming away from Black gang Chine Car park, Simon’s minibus caught on an obstacle and slashed and punctured the tyre, an d they had to call up the RAC for help. So when they returned we gave him a big round of applause. The Battalion Inspection officers called today
.
At tea when we enjoyed a salad, Matt read out a plaque and presented it to the cooks to encourage them in their work. It was a bit cheeky really but as his Mum and Dad are in charge of catering he was about the only person who could get away with it, and I don’t actually think he did. He’ll learn. Chess, Football and Draughts were pursued and I cleaned the table tennis tables that were covered with thick brown dust. We gave Colin a big round of applause before his Quiz.
Some men called to collect a caravan from the end of the field. Sammy let them do so and only afterwards considered whether they had any right to it. Colin’s Musical Quiz was a great success for everyone except the oldies...Malcolm and Mr Madds, who managed about 1 right answer each. Malcolm said to me “We will have to go out more ( i e Clubs, and the cinema ). Tent 2 won. Evening Prayers theme was “ A Righteous Heart”
For Staff Prayers we sang “Such love”, “Who can search the depths of sorrow”, “Only by grace”, “ You are my strength.”
11.30pm Eve decided to wake up for an early feed keeping Daddy from his bed
THURSDAY. AUGUST 24th
==================
Andy Willitt did not want to get up so we had to abandon him in the shower block when the boys took over. He says that 10 of them all had a shower but they were not there long enough to take their clothes off and put them on again and have a shower so I reckon they bribed him.
There were arguments in tent 2 with only Matt and Ben doing any work towards Tent inspection and Dan was very unco-operative. When belatedly Dan offered to help, Matt refused, which means that they both had something to learn, not least about forgiveness. Previously the staff reckoned that from sheer experience Matt’s tent would win, and dependent on him it might but they all need to learn to work together.
When it came to it Tents 2 and 3 tied with 92% and tent 1 had 89% Sue led our devotions with a testimony about suffering from depression.
Most of us walked to Bembridge Mill and the boys had a guided tour over it. Euan, Alan and Bethany raced round and round the outside of the mill.
The local police came to our site to complain about boys returning to camp at midnight drunk and causing havoc. We from our Register we proved it was not our boys.
Before lunch we had a Puddocks match. Highest scorers, were Nigel 32 Scott 16, Matt 11. We lunched on quiche with potatoes, peas and carrots.
A party went into Sandown. Some went putting. Some shopping. Stuart Smith and Ross accompanied Andy and me around town. Me and Andy played at 10 pin bowling and we all went on the Dodgems. The boys played crazy golf, using up gift tokens they had acquired. Stuart scored 39 and Ross 36.
We finished up at Brown’s cafe for scones, cream and mugs of tea.
We had sausage rolls and salad for tea. We played Rounders, Ryan’s team 19.James’s Team 8½. Best scorers Geoff 6 Stephen 5. The theme of evening prayer was An empty heart. I John 5 v 10-12. We sang “I am a new creation” Read in Stedfast magazine lent by Mike that BB companies now exist in Thailand, the Philippines , Indonesia, Cambodia, Siberia, Mongolia, and negotiations are under way to re-introduce BB to China.
The Seniors argued, squabbled and fell out over organising “Thought for the Day
FRIDAY. AUGUST 25th
===============
We had Reveille at 7. Staff prayers at 7.30. Tent inspection at 7.50 and started the Camp run at 7.50. I put up the line of “Welcome Millennium 2000” bunting at the start which would also be the finish, between the kitchen and the marquee but the wind was so strong that the ribbon snapped. So we stretched the plastic washing line across and wound the bunting around it. The course was up to the Monument and round it and back to Camp The result was that LUKE CURTIS won
After Breakfast the seniors presented THOUGHT FOR THE DAY with a contrast of the BIG BRUVVERS the TV show with hope God acts. Nigel led prayer. James read a prayer.
Most of the boys and some of the officers went to the Laser Range, Head hunting at £5 each. I stayed at camp as duty officer in charge deputising for Simon for 3 hours. Lynda started serious composing. I sold off, and cashed up and closed down the tuck shop. Camp appeal closed at £55
The certificates were prepared and the concert programme arrangements. After lunch I disappeared and some thought I’d left camp as they could not find me. I was “locked in” the tuck shop tent, preparing a scripted potted history of the Isle of Wight to introduce the concert as the C.O. was expecting something special. Took about 2 hours. Then after a cup of tea I got on with setting up the “stage area” , curtains, and seating and set out the song books.
Then I went off and changed, and strolled across to the marquee where the audience were seated waiting. Cliff and Glenys, Paul and Jill were so taken aback at what I was wearing that they dived off to find something better to wear. I had new grey check trousers on and a new maroon jacket.
The Concert Programme was

AT Much BB Camp 2K
On Saturday we travelled down to Whitecliff
At Much BB Camp 2K
We got up in the middle of the night shift
Three mini-buses brought us here.
One white, one red, one green
The trailer packed so full of bags
the most we’ve ever seen.
And T shirts blue were worn by all
but would we keep them clean?

The cooks were Paul, Jill, Cliff and Glenys

They don’t have time to play at Table tennis.
Cliff went off with Mike one day
to fish miles out at sea
They hoped to catch some dog fish
but alas for you and me
They brought back just a sun tan
and no fish for our camp tea

have helped Eve take a bath.

Tomorrow we go back on the ferry
From Much Whitecliff by the sea

Between 4.30am and 5.am the heavens opened and it rained torrentially on and on. we got up and packed our bags. At Breakfast we greeted our 5 Welsh friends who had joined us over night. we had bacon rolls, sliced cheese and fried potatoes, we had “Thought for the Day” Those of us in rainwear got the hot water and we washed up. Then we moved all the luggage to the marquee.
We turned back our ground sheets, loaded the mini-buses and the trailer. Some did a litter search of the whole camp site in the rain and got pretty wet doing so, accounts were settled up. And it still kept raining. There had been 54 incidents recorded in the First aid book.
At 11.05 We moved out of the camp site the roads were flooded the roads busy. We drew up in a car park overlooking a wide valley to kill time as the ferries were running late. Simon then left that location and drive into Tesco’s at Ryde to fill up with Diesel, then we rejoined the convoy. There were further delays getting onto the ferry. On the mainland we stopped at South Minns. motorway services. Arrived at Walden

THURSDAY. AUGUST 24th
==================
The Seniors argued, squabbled and fell out over organising “Thought for the Day
FRIDAY. AUGUST 25th
===============

They brought back just a sun tan
and no fish for our camp tea

SATURDAY. AUGUST 26th 2000 CAMP
==========================
