So the various researchers in the UK, USA and Canada and the experts at Bedfordshire County Records refer to the licensee of the “Flying Horse” as
James (John) Maddams son of William Maddams & Hannah born 12.01.1768 baptised 15.02.1768, [ named William at his baptism by mistake]. Older brother William was still alive married to Elizabeth Young .
Son of William and Hannah (nee Parish) as proved by Hannah’s Will
.
Believed to be the James mentioned in various documents.
Referred to by Rev W A M Grant Hon.CP. re Clophill in his book “THE CLEFT IN THE HILLS”
that in 1814 (should that have been 1815?] At the defeat of Napoleon by Wellington at Waterloo Clophill had a street party and James Maddams ,Victualer of the “Flying Horse” supplied drink.
Buried as “John“ 1846 in his 79th year then identified as “Publican”
On 24.06.1789 James married at Clophill Sarah Taylor bp 3.4.1772 died 31.12.1813 and she was the daughter of Samuel Taylor a local farmer, credited with inventing the iron plough.
They had 15 children and James had to buy an additional house in the village to house some of them as there was not sufficient room at the Inn. His name appears on the deeds.

James (John) Maddams son of William Maddams & Hannah born 12.01.1768 baptised 15.02.1768, [ named William at his baptism by mistake]. Older brother William was still alive married to Elizabeth Young .
Son of William and Hannah (nee Parish) as proved by Hannah’s Will
.
Believed to be the James mentioned in various documents.
Referred to by Rev W A M Grant Hon.CP. re Clophill in his book “THE CLEFT IN THE HILLS”
that in 1814 (should that have been 1815?] At the defeat of Napoleon by Wellington at Waterloo Clophill had a street party and James Maddams ,Victualer of the “Flying Horse” supplied drink.
Buried as “John“ 1846 in his 79th year then identified as “Publican”
On 24.06.1789 James married at Clophill Sarah Taylor bp 3.4.1772 died 31.12.1813 and she was the daughter of Samuel Taylor a local farmer, credited with inventing the iron plough.
They had 15 children and James had to buy an additional house in the village to house some of them as there was not sufficient room at the Inn. His name appears on the deeds.
