On the sunny autumn afternoon of September 28th 2013 Ashdon Baptist Church chapel looking light and bright in the sunshine and with the beautiful flowers was close to being full with friends from Ashdon village, Saffron Walden and Thaxted as Glenn Miller played the organ leading to the start of the Service

We sang together
“NOW IS THE TIME TO WORSHIP” by BRIAN DOERKSEN
Come, now is the time to worship
Come, now is the time to give your heart
Come, just as you are to worship
Come, just as you are before your God
Come
One day every tongue will confess You are God
One day every knee will bow
Still the greatest treasure remains for those
Who gladly choose You now
Come, now is the time to worship
Come, now is the time to give your heart
Come, just as you are to worship
Come, just as you are before your God
Come
One day every tongue will confess You are God
One day every knee will bow
Still the greatest treasure remains for those
Who gladly choose You now
Willingly we choose to surrender our lives
Willingly our knees will bow
With all our heart, soul, mind and strength
We gladly choose You now
Come, now is the time to worship
Come, now is the time to give your heart
Come, just as you are to worship
Oh come, just as you are before your God
Come, come, come, oh come
Oh come, come
Bow, you nations
Come and worship
Come and worship your maker
[ Lyrics from eLyrics.net ]
Psalm 138 was read
I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart;
before the "gods" I will sing your praise.
2I will bow down toward your holy temple
and will praise your name
for your love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things
your name and your word.
3When I called, you answered me;
you made me bold and stouthearted.
4May all the kings of the earth praise you, O LORD,
when they hear the words of your mouth.
5May they sing of the ways of the LORD,
for the glory of the LORD is great.
6Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly,
but the proud he knows from afar.
7Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve my life;
you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes,
with your right hand you save me.
8The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me;
your love, O LORD, endures forever--
do not abandon the works of your hands.[ quoted from the NIV ]
We sang together
PRAISE TO THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near;
Praise Him in glad adoration.
Praise to the Lord, who over all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen how thy desires ever have been
Granted in what He ordaineth?
Praise to the Lord, who hath fearfully, wondrously, made thee;
Health hath vouchsafed and, when heedlessly falling, hath stayed thee.
What need or grief ever hath failed of relief?
Wings of His mercy did shade thee.
Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do,
If with His love He befriend thee.
Praise to the Lord, who, when tempests their warfare are waging,
Who, when the elements madly around thee are raging,
Biddeth them cease, turneth their fury to peace,
Whirlwinds and waters assuaging.
Praise to the Lord, who, when darkness of sin is abounding,
Who, when the godless do triumph, all virtue confounding,
Sheddeth His light, chaseth the horrors of night,
Saints with His mercy surrounding.
Praise to the Lord, O let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him.
Let the Amen sound from His people again,
Gladly for aye we adore Him.
We learned the details of THE JOURNEY that had brought The Church and Gavin to this day.
Glenn Miller the Church Secretary reported how in 2012 Rev David Doonan announced his retirement and the meetings of the Deacons began to consider what to do next. They had to discuss and decide a Church Profile outlining what the Church and the district had to offer by way of ministry potential, and who they thought they should be seeking. This then was agreed by the Church Meeting
They went forward to receive a list of potential candidates seeking pastorates
Then they received a message from Spurgeon's Baptist College London that they had a new student for whom they were seeking a Minister in Training placement and would the Baptist Church at Ashdon consider the idea?
The Deacons considered it and met with Gavin. They stated their position and he stated his, and both parties went away to pray about the matter, they had known Gavin for some time as he had been working alongside Revd. David Doonan testing out his Calling.
The Deacons were assured this was the way ahead and called a Special Church Meeting and a unanimous decision was made to invite Gavin and they were all very pleased when he accepted.,
Glenn closed by saying that At the risk of being considered a heretic, he just wished that such an appointment might have been possible without such a great deal of time spent on doing it. Most of us understand what he meant. This Baptist means of choosing and appointing ministers does seem rather cumbersome. As thought a member of the congregation who had suggested the appointment as soon as he heard that David was retiring.
Gavin remarked how 6 years ago had anyone told him he would be entering training to be a Minister of the Christian Church he would not have believed it. He especially thanked his wife Jo and his daughters Hannah and Sarah for their support. He expressed his gratitude for Revd David Doonan and Revd Simon Mattholie who as minister at the time of Saffron Walden Baptist Church had encouraged him in leadership training. Gavin then thanked his long loved friend who had provided him a 4 day a week job at Thaxted so he could use 'his day off work” as he called for testing out his call.
They had been friends at RAB School, then at Newport Free Grammar School and then at Print College. Gavin was pleased he was present with us. He thanked the people of Ashdon Baptist Church and all his friends at Saffron Walden Baptist Church, about 40 of whom were present. He had been before the EBA Recognition Committee for a grilling and they had most kind and helpful and they had recommended for him training Then application was made to Spurgeon's College where he and Jo had been interviewed by the the then principal Norman Wright with whom he had engaged in theological conversation until Jo kicked him under the the table before he got out of his depth and blocked his way. He had had so much support and encouragement.
Paul Hills then led the rite of confessing faith and promising faithfulness by first Gavin, then by the members of the Church Congregation who appeared to be about 12 in number, and then by all those present as supporters,
After which we were led in prayer
Paul then declared Gavin as the Minister in Training of Ashdon Baptist Church and blessed him and the congregation was invited to applaud which they did most heartily.
We sang together
TAKE MY LIFE AND LET IT BE CONSECRATED LORD TO THEE
Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
*Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in endless praise.
Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee.
Take my voice and let me sing,
Always, only for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee.
Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
Every pow’r as Thou shalt choose.
Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne.
Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.
And then we sang together
BE STILL IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD
Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here;
Come bow before him now with reverence and fear:
In him no sin is found - we stand on holy ground.
Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here.
Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around;
He burns with holy fire, with splendour he is crowned:
How awesome is the sight - our radiant King of light!
Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around.
Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place;
He comes to cleanse and heal, to minister his grace -
No work too hard for him. In faith receive from him.
Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place.
Paul then introduced Simon as the CEO of the mission RURAL MINISTRIES and prayed for him, as he brought his message from the LORD.
Simon began his message by referring to Ed Milliband the Leader of the Labour Party who in his recent Conference speech spoke for an hour without notes saying he hoped we would not mind if he used a few outline notes for his three hour sermon, and while we were chuckling he said “Don't worry it's only two”
Simon read Luke 15 verse 1 -10 from the Message Paraphrase
The Story of the Lost Sheep
15 1-3 By this time a lot of men and women of doubtful reputation were hanging around Jesus, listening intently. The Pharisees and religion scholars were not pleased, not at all pleased. They growled, “He takes in sinners and eats meals with them, treating them like old friends.” Their grumbling triggered this story.
4-7 “Suppose one of you had a hundred sheep and lost one. Wouldn’t you leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the lost one until you found it? When found, you can be sure you would put it across your shoulders, rejoicing, and when you got home call in your friends and neighbours, saying, ‘Celebrate with me! I’ve found my lost sheep!’ Count on it — there’s more joy in heaven over one sinner’s rescued life than over ninety-nine good people in no need of rescue.
The Story of the Lost Coin
8-10 “Or imagine a woman who has ten coins and loses one. Won’t she light a lamp and scour the house, looking in every nook and cranny until she finds it? And when she finds it you can be sure she’ll call her friends and neighbours: ‘Celebrate with me! I found my lost coin!’ Count on it — that’s the kind of party God’s angels throw every time one lost soul turns to God.”
Simon mentioned that recently he had lost a Credit card. He had 3 for buying for different aspects of life including the Mission and the family. He was very frustrated and irritated by the loss but his wife and daughters did not seem much concerned and pointed out that he still had 2 he could use. He had visions of someone waltzing off on a luxury holiday using his account. He was really concerned with the gap in his wallet.
He went about the house moving the cushions, papers etc getting more and more upset. His wife suggested that he went back to the place where he lost it and maybe he would find it He did not did that helpful. He began offering modest rewards, starting at £1 for anyone who searched and found it. No one was taking him seriously and he was thinking of the points he would lose with the card. On a desk top he pushed some papers which revealed a bank statement and there with it was his bank card
He was much relived and joyful.
He admitted the story had had a few embellishments on what really happened, but he had told it that way to show the reaction there had been in the passage of the Bible read regarding the lost coin, lost sheep and lost people
He asked Gavin to hold up a toy sheep. He had given him. Gavin reckoned he'd lost it. Then Gavin found it and held it high.
Simon reminded us that in Heaven the angels had a party each time a sinner's soul is saved.
He reminded us all, and Gavin in particular that the first role of any minister is looking for lost people. Searching for them to restore them.
Our priority in mission is searching for lost people.
The Bible tells us of Adam and Eve after they had disobeyed God the first time that they hid from him in shame and embarrassment but God came looking for Adam. God is still looking for people anmd he needs our help in the search.
1 God is concerned with Messy people with messy lives to rescue them
We are to build relationships with people
The religious leaders did not like the way Jesus associated with sinners who broke the Law and partied with them.
Constantly search for people until you find them, release and restore them and bring them in.
2.Take some risks. As a shepherd leaves the 99 and goes searching in the wilderness for a lost sheep he risks the others roaming off too. Motivate the 99 to share in the mission too.
3 These stories don't end with the coin, sheep or son being found, no, they all ended with a party.
The Pharisees had an idea that there is joy in heaven when a lost sinner is obliterated for their wickedness.
Jesus turned that upside down as that has nothing to do with God's character.
God is not in the business of catching people out,
but on catching people in.
Our God is the God of Eternity and his mission is search and rescue.
So as a congregation be ready to support Gavin
1.in reaching out to lost people,
2.in taking risks to reach and liberate people,
3.in having parties in the course of doing it.
We sang together BE THOU MY VISION O LORD OF MY HEART;
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.
Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.
Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, put first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.
Oh, God, be my everything, be my delight
Be, Jesus, my glory My soul's satisfied
Oh, God, be my everything, be my delight
Be, Jesus, my glory My soul's satisfied
High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven's joys, bright Heaven's Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.
Gavin then pronounced a Benediction Prayer and a Blessing appeared on the screen
After some moments pause we filed out, many going to the Church Hall at the back for a sumptuous spread, of sandwiches, scones, biscuits, crisps, cakes, sausage rolls, and coffee and tea, together with much laughter and conversation
