GOD HAS SPENT ETERNITY CREATING A WONDERFUL UNIVERSE
He spent a lot of time and effort making the planet we live on
Came the day he decided to make MAN - kind – humans, to look after it and manage it.
BUT the plan went wrong because
having been given freedom they did not trust and obey
GOD then spent centuries trying to solve the problems that caused
and his final solution was to allow His son in Heaven, the King of Heaven, to be born here as a MAN to show us a better way
but those in power saw him as a threat to their way of life
God allowed him , JESUS , to be killed as a sacrifice to buy back and release humans from the power of Sin, Satan, Death and Hell
ALL that reminds us THAT GOD HAS A PLAN and We are part of that plan
He needs us to trust and obey him so that he can respond with power to change this world for the better
Where ever people do that he changes things
HE has a plan for each of us
He starts by converting us from what we may choose and teaching us what He wants us to do.
He starts with the little we think we have to offer
He encourages us to use it
GOD meets our needs in order that we can
with him Care and Share for other people
He takes our little and he multiplies it.
WHEN BILLY GRAHAM attained the age of 95 a friend remarked to him that during his ministry he had preached of Jesus Christ to over 500,000,000 people. Billy's response was “How disappointing. So few.” and compared with the world population he was right , as that is about one sixteenth of the population and we are told about 2 billion have never so much as heard the name of Jesus Christ.
So where does that leave us, you and me. How many converts have we made ?.
Well in reality none, because it is the job of the Holy Spirit to convert people, but we are each as Christians called to be the Servants of the King, to be his partners and share in His work.
We may scatter the seed but the Holy Spirit germinates it and enables it to grow,
Years back I read about a man, a member of a church welcome team who every time someone new visited the church he challenged them with this thought. “If tonight you face death, are you ready? Will you be going to Heaven or Hell” Some felt he should be taken off the welcome team as his approach was regarded as off putting but one day one man that he challenged replied “ I am today's visiting preacher, have you ever had a person reply to your question? Has anyone every responded to you and the first man said “ NO”.
The preacher then told him “Where I went to college to train to be a minister I met there 4 men who had been to this church, who you had asked that question of, and they all became Christians and felt called to become ministers because of you.
Our approach may seem unorthodox or unique but that is how God works to reach people.
Within a few weeks of becoming a Christian aged 15 I was led to start a Scripture Union Reading group amongst various of my cousins children and the following Easter having been started as a Sunday school assistant in a rapidly declining Sunday School staff, that ended up with me at 16 being propelled into the offices of SS Secretary and Treasurer and then Leader by the age of 17 I was able to introduce SU Notes to the other children, and some are still using them.
One day I was helping the Life Deacon repair hymn books and he was the Leader of Sewards End Baptist Mission. A woman put her head around the door and remarked “ Arthur Mrs K cannot come and speak to the Women Fellowship this afternoon, will you sort it out.” He replied “Sure. I'll give a message and John here will chair the meeting”
When she'd gone I said “Hey, I've never done anything like that before”. He said “Oh well it's high time to get you started” and so began 16 years of village lay preaching and much else.
Around the time of the Billy Graham crusades and with some of my youth fellowship friends we were marshalled into being a Youth Witness Team taking services in the villages on Sunday evenings, and everywhere we went an attache case of Crusade Magazines, VISTA the British Youth for Christ magazine, Campaigner and SU Children's magazines. Daily Bible study notes and Christian books went too and from that grew a local Christian bookstall ministry and a 500 volume Christian lending library.
Then as a member of the Church missionary committee I was led to organise local folk to part with various regular magazines to send abroad to BMS missionaries who could not afford them, particularly Readers Digest and the Baptist Times
Our little committee which was really the start of what is now the Lighthouse Prayer Ministry began hiring hoardings to display Text posters on, and distributing tracts, and Gospel Gem Calendars at Christmas. We published a magazine THE MESSAGE that peaked at a circulation of 500.
There was at that time a group called the Friends Evangelistic Band, a branch of the Quakers who hired hoardings on railway stations for Text posters and they had one at Stortford where the access to the West side track to Cambridge was down a lot of steps and a sharp turn to the East onto that platform.
One day a young businessman came home to Stortford from the City in a state of severe depression with problems he could not share with his wife and parents. On his way home from the station he decided to end it all and commit suicide. He returned to the station intending to run down the steps and throw himself in the face of an oncoming express. As he reached the turning in the stairway his eyes saw the text poster that he had never really noticed before. He stopped mesmerised by it's message that spoke to his need and the express rattled past, and he turned, went hone shared his problem with his family and became a Christian.
Posters can be powerful when the Holy Spirit uses them.
In 1958 I went with my parents to Felixstowe for a week and there was an East of England Keswick at the Presbyterian Church for a week and I went there. I had found myself a secret place on the cliffs on a ledge where I went to pray and one particular night, sat there about 9pm and suddenly there was a massive flash of lightning and a huge clap of thunder and it began to pour with rain and all I was wearing I was shirt and trousers, so I ran down the hill into town and sheltered under a wide porch of a large building, and when the storm was over I took note what it was - The Hostel for the Deaf.
The thought was implanted in my mind. “Give them a gift by way of thank you, Give them some Bibles. From home I wrote to them to discover that indeed they were ready for that but needed a modern translation as their clients found difficulty reading the AV.
So we funded a set of the NEW ENGLISH BIBLE.
That was the first of many Bible placements since, some through Gideons International and some in other ways including with the Naval, Military and Air Force Bible Society
and there are places where Gideons wont go but God wants to be represented and years later the opportunity presented itself to get Bibles into the rooms of a nudist hostel in Sussex.
Years later too I was in correspondence with a top eye-specialist in Ghana then serving at a Roman Catholic Hospital and I asked him whether they had Bibles for every bed, and he said NO and although it took 3 years to arrange it, Gideons USA through Gideons Ghana placed 160 Bibles there.
A lot of the work I got involved in was providing Bibles, Testament and Gospels to non-Church goers and people in remote parts of the world.
Being able to pass something on in printed form with as few words as possible can help some people.
This has included postal outreach to pre arranged agents in Cuba using Gospels of John in Spanish so thin they fit unobtrusively into a sock or shoe. We used to send them in an assortment of envelopes in size and colour on various dates to confuse the secret police and they got through safely,
I was led to work using a number of international pen friend organizations. At one time the Youth Magazine LOOK and LEARN had a pen pal club and each week published there, addresses of various young folk aged 8 – 18, and for several years I sent Bible portions in various languages to over 5000 of them until it ceased publication and got some interesting replies, from places as divers as South Korea, China, Japan, Kazakstan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, over 100 countries in all.
Lighthouse Ministry has been a series of projects involving hundreds of people around the world working with each other to reach people in remote places
GOD GIVES US SKILLS, THINGS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR REASONS.
Using a pen pal club based in the South Korea
I was mailing to people in various parts of Africa, and I was given an address in Ghana to which I sent a booklet DAILY STRENGTH with 30 days of promises and the hymns “O God our help in ages past” and “Abide with me”, to a woman in Accra
Months later I had a reply that told me she was a night watch guard at a factory, and sang in the Cathedral Choir she had become ill and was in hospital very depressed and had been there awhile and felling no better. An envelope was delivered to her and she tore off one end and a booklet dropped out, and she read it and could not put it down until she reached the end by which time hope had dawned and her spirits were lifted and she began to feel better, She put the booklet back in the envelope and then found the letter and marvelled that the envelope had been posted 3000 miles away by a man she did not know 3 months earlier, 2 months before she became ill and prayed for deliverance. And while she was doing that the answer was already on it's way. She recovered and went back to her tasks.
Another person I contacted in Accra was a 15 year old school boy whose Dad had just died and he faced leaving school for lack of money. We funded his last year at school and his exam fees. He did well and wanted to go to University but needed a Grant. This could only be obtained through someone working in the Civil service and I knew a College lecturer. Through him he got the grant and we paid for his supplies.
He went and trained and became a Junior School teacher. He also became Sunday School leader at Victory Road Baptist Church Accra, then a Deacon and Church Secretary and a lay preacher, and secretary of the Accra Association of Baptist Youth organisations
He studied further to teach in secondary schools but believing God wanted him to train for the Ministry, his next letter was from California where the Ghana Baptist Convention funded him to train at a Southern Baptist Convention college. He has obtained degrees and did a course as a Hospice Chaplain. He has been pastoring a 2 congregation Ethnic Church, one group Chinese and the other Afro-Americans. This coming autumn he is going back to Ghana as youth pastor working on the streets amongst impoverished teenagers
All that because we paid out £45 to keep him in school
11 years ago I was asked by a Scottish Mission charity from my pen pal connections to supply money to provide local language Bibles to 8 pastors of small village churches on the north bank of the Shire River in Mozambique who with their fellow refugees had returned after years of civil war to their villages, and all they found were sandy beaches everything had disappeared and they had to begin from scratch and all they had to preach from were well thumbed tracts
That was the first of scores of Bibles we have been enabled to supply since, to that country and Malawi and about 20 Bikes for pastors at £45 each plus a Study Bible. They've supplied about 200, with 500 to go. We were able to supply tents for an evangelistic team that visit scores of villages every year. They supply native pastors for over 700 churches and run an orphanage for 200 and assist as many again living at home with 1 parent. They have their own farm managing 3 harvests a year.
We have been able to supply illustrated calendars and pictures for the dorms, maps for the classrooms, a canoe for ferrying supplies and preachers across the river, and while the Church we gave it to, and their pastor's home was all destroyed in this year's cyclone, the canoe survived to be greatly used in the rescue operation.
We supplied a new computerised DVD projector for showing the JESUS film dubbed with a local language sound track. And a new screen erected at each village for open air performances at night. On all these excursions hundreds respond to the preaching of the Gospel. Including many Muslims seeking the Jesus of whom the Koran speaks of, but never as Saviour. We provide 2nd hand Bible study booklets and Christian books donated in UK.
Another Church supplied a new Land Rover and spare tyres and a trailer for gear.
They are starting their next tour of a township and 19 villages tomorrow.
There have been times over the years when our work seems to have come to an end, only to flare up in a new direction
One such year was 2011 until a parcel arrived out of the blue from Nigeria containing 220 slips of paper clearly cut from tracts with names written in, asking for a Bible and some Christian literature. No letter, just an address inside.
I thought what do I do with this? 2 £5 Bibles from the Bible Society costing £5 to post would mean finding £1650 and we'd got just a few pounds. So I replied sending them all back to the address in the envelope and saying NO WAY.
Then later I had a letter from a pastor to say that several of his congregation had turned up at his office streaming in tears at my letter.
He explained that they were all penniless students who distributed tracts on the streets and wanted Bibles they could witness with. So the Lord provided me an opportunity to meet a need Action that was just the start, and 10,000 copies later we are still providing Bibles printed in China through a bookshop in Ibadan for new converts in Nigeria, many from Islam. We have been having difficulties due to new laws on the sending of money to Nigeria in getting money there but a Christian businessman with a business there is trying to sort it and we have requests for 760 more costing £1000 for which we have £20 in hand.
For some people their Bible is but a tract or a gospel. Years ago I gave a Gospel of John to a taxi driver, and 20 years later she wrote to me saying “John my Gospel is falling to bits with much use could you supply another” so I sent her another and a copy of Romans.
A young Frenchman lay wounded on a pallet in hospital at the siege of Saint Quentain and noticed on the bed cover someone had placed a tract. He read it and was converted by it. A monument of that man stands in Paris, Bible in hand, Admiral Coligny, leader of the Reformation in France. That tract was also read by his nurse, a Sister of Mercy, who passed it to her Lady Abbess who was converted by it and fled persecution in France and married a young Hollander The influence she had on him changed the history of Europe as he became Prince William of Orange champion of liberty and Protestantism in Europe and late king of England.
All that from 1 tract left on a blanket on a hospital ballet.
Not every tract is so used but many people have been converted by tracts as being the only way to get the Gospel to those people.
A 15 young girl in a UK city knew she had failed all his GCE exams and dare not face her parents and decided to commit suicide. At that point some one pushed a tract under her front door on the street. She read it, was converted wrote to the address on it. They gave her a Bible, a Bible Study Course, she retook her exams and passed, trained as a teacher and served in Austria with the European Christian Mission educating other missionaries children.
That is why I distribute tracts I know from experience God can use them. God can use all sort of ways and ordinary folk like us and He does extra ordinary things that the Holy Spirit can use to reach and convert other people.
We are just the labourers in the vineyard, the messenger boys and girls, simply asked, as was Moses, to trust and obey
The Holy Spirit is our Line Manager, and as we co-operate with Him, Jesus is interceding for us, and the Father's angel hosts are watching ready to help us.
These last few weeks I have had about 14 young men in my flat putting in a new Kitchen, 7 were Rumanian, some were English. I gave each one as a Thank You a copy of OUR DAILY BREAD from copies collected and handed on to me by Anne here. They all appreciated be thanked and in a tangible way One never knows where this may lead.
There's a Guide who never falters,
And when he leads I cannot stray,
For step by step He goes before me,
And marks my path, He knows the way.
Often the path grows dim and dreary,
The darkness hides the cheering ray,
Still I will trust, tho' worn and weary,
My Saviour leads, He knows the way.
He knows the evils that surround me,
The turnings that would lead astray,
No foes of night can ere confound me,
For Jesus leads, He knows the way.
He spent a lot of time and effort making the planet we live on
Came the day he decided to make MAN - kind – humans, to look after it and manage it.
