SIGNIFICANT EVENTS 1960 - 2000

1960 OPENING THE BAPTIST BUNGALOWS in Rowntree Way for retired ministers, wives and widows, that became a source of great help to us in additional ministers, preachers, deacons. They were mainly funded by sale of the Hill Street General Baptist’s church and an appeal to the women of the Baptist Women’s League.
1965-1999 THE MISSIONARY COUNCIL organised Harvest Displays as part of it’s work. Before 1965 we gave £300 a year to the Baptist Missionary Society and £150 a year to Home Mission. 1 guinea a year to the Bible Society. £1 a year to a ministerial training college, and nothing to any other mission. This was mainly from groups in the congregation and personal supporters
The Missionary Council with Mission secretaries and representatives of the Women’s Meeting, Sunday School, Youth organisations, and Diaconate, was under the Minister’s chairmanship.
Between them they introduced many things now taken for granted, including College Sunday, the annual Christmas Charity Appeal, Harvest Projects, Support for the Baptist World Alliance, much increased support for the Colleges, the Bible Society and other missions Also was set up the Mission Auxillary with 4 other local Baptist Churches including the Summer Garden parties. We collected spectacles, provided hymnbooks and books for the Church overseas. equipment for Tools with a Mission, lots of knitted garments, etc.
When disbanded in 1999 the Church had accepted full responsibility for mission support and currently 22% of our income is given away to help others.
1969-1971 THE FOLLOWERS The youth organisation, the last leaders of which were Graham and Susan Jellis, the teenagers in this group went on to provide the Church with a Vicar. A URC lay minister, and a Baptist minister, several deacons here and elsewhere, and other youth leaders.
1970 JUNIOR CHURCH AT WORK One in the photo used was Faith Costain now a Christian mother in New Zealand and one of the 10 year old boys of this time was Dane Baker who is now a Senior Baptist Minister at Easthampstead

1971 JUNIOR CHURCH Displays were set up as teaching aids One year we fashioned he platform as a space station. There was much making of charts, banners, friezes and models
1971 CHURCH CONFERENCE the first of many, out of which new ideas took permanent shape, particularly the Day Centre.
1973 An Example of Believers Baptism The young man shown is now Rev James Grote Baptist Minister at Oxford, and for a time BMS Missionary to El Salvador
1975 Bicentenary. Although celebrated a year late as in 1875
it had quite an impact locally and our history “UNVANQUISHED” was published and circulated around the UK and abroad. We played Cricket with Abby Lane United Reformed Church and lost, we had a week long exhibition and a 2 hour illustrated lecture, a civic service and a flower Festival .
1977 SALE OF WORK the stall holders and assistants wore Romany Gypsy dresses to raise money for CHIP
1978 CHIP The Church Hall Improvements Project was or putting in a second floor which directly led us to establish The Boys’ Brigade Company, the Guide Companies, one at our church and the other at Golden Acre Community Hall, until it moved onto Church premises and a second Brownies pack, Later it enabled us to have Beavers and Rainbows on the premises, and for 6 months to save them closing down the Girls Brigade.
1978 MOTHERS & TODDLERS CLUB which was active for many years and became Tots and Co now discontinued. l.
1979 Year of the Bunny. The Harvest Project was to supply white rabbits to an agriculturist missionary’s project in Zaire. A local press handout caught the imagination of the Media and the Minister with a Rabbit appeared on regional and national television. The story was also on Local radio, BBC News, the BBC World Service, National news networks in Africa, Australia and New Zealand and in overseas papers
1979 1981,1983 It’s A Knockout events were held at Long Acres Debden to bring all parts of the Church family together at play in aid of fund raising for the church building projects
1981 Peter Lawrence’s Marathon. Peter participated in the first and second London Marathons, raising money for CHIP
1981 BMS Auxillary Garden Parties were held regularly
at Robert & Jeanie Wiseman’s Pinkneys Manor at Wimbish, or Bidwells Farm at Ashdon.
1982 and 1992 Hill House Housing Development of 17 flats
The brain child of Rev Dennis Horwood and originally organised by the Baptist Housing Association and the Church opened in 1982 and we celebrated it’s 10th anniversary in 1992
1984 1987 Youth Fellowship Canal Boat Holidays were held retaining the interest of young people several of whom are serving the Church today
1983 BB National Centenary, Company Group photo.
We began our Company in 1980. Since then over 350 boys have passed through, drawn from most of the church congregations in Walden and several villages, including 4 of our present officers who began as Anchor Boys and Juniors
1984 and 1987 Carnival entries Most years since 1953 we had entered a Church Float, and most years since 1980 our BB Company had done so too. All helping raise money for Charities. Sometimes our BB Band took part. Since these events became water fights we opted out and now provide refreshments for the crowds in the church grounds. .
1985 PEOPLE OF GOD. ART EXPO celebrating our 211th Anniversary our organisations created this frieze of 3 feet square pictures from Noah to the Ecumenical Councils of the 20th century and looking into the future. we also made 6 banners to hang on pillars. Included from our own history is the martyrdom of John Newman on the Common in 1555 and the creation of Upper Meeting with Joseph Gwennap in 1774
1987 New Church logo prepared by Jack Turnbull after seeking various suggestions from the congregation and used on T- shirts, Sweat shirts and metal badges and now on the windows of the West entrance and defined on a board in the South entrance..
1988 German visitors from Recklinghausen stayed in various homes This group visited Cambridge with their hosts. Folk from our church visited them in 1989
1988 East Anglian Baptist Scene 88 Organised as a day out for all age groups by Eastern Area Baptists at Bury St Edmunds with plenty of sports activities and a swimming pool, picnic, workshops, a March of witness and a closing service. some of our young people carried the Essex Banner
1990 The day the congregation walked out and sang a hymn outside the building and sang “Who is he in yonder stall?. Tis the LORD O wondrous story.

1990 The Church Youth Council IN CONCERT. Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies, Beavers Junior Church, and Boys Brigade participated in a Variety Show organised by the Church Youth Council which co-ordinated youth work , arranged parties, exhibitions, socials, quiz nights, picnics, and sports events
1990 March for Jesus. We marched to the Common and had an outdoor prayer vigil for our Nation
1990 The Church letting it’s hair down had a Church party, one of many,
and it was attended by Graham Jones who later became a Christian, helped evangelise at a student Mission at University , did a missionary training course and became our Missionary to Poland where he went to teach English and witness and joined a Baptist Church and married a polish girl and they live in UK now.
1991 Easter Day the open tomb was created for us on the platform by Rev Tricia Troughton
1991 Sleep Out. We raised £300 for the English Churches Housing Trust for youth accommodation. We did it again in 1992
1992 The Women’s Own fellowship celebrated their 60th Anniversary Jane Drane a founder member in 1932 who died at 103 donated a hand bell to be rung at meetings. It was rung again at this event when her youngest sister Alice Maddams then 87( who died in 2003 aged 98) cut the cake. Many Women’s Own members became Church Members and some became Deacons and church Officers. Dissolved about 2002 the last few members attend the Methodist, United Reformed or Salvation Army Women’s Fellowships.
1992 Our Beavers played games in the Upper Hall
1992 Euro Sunday on the occasion of the visit to us of the President of the European Baptist Federation. We hung from the gallery many European flags.
1992 BMS Bicentenary We celebrated with a Tea and an Evening Presentation led by Rev Ron Messenger. Judy Wilson made the cake. We contributed bags of 200 coins raising £1324 for new missionary work.
1993 Knit-in for AFAR AID women of the congregation met at Betty Thornton’s home to knit and later our missionary to Ethiopia Wendy Spark distributed them there
1997 Feldon Weekend The first of these much appreciated events
1997 Farewell to Rev Tricia Troughton our first woman minister who did so much to encourage members of the congregation to use their gifts and talents, and who opened her home and garden in Newport Road to many events, groups and activities
1999 The Partnership Mission when a team of 11 Baptists led by Rev Gary Crawford from Florida came and led us in a mission to the community
1999 Picnic at the Manse to greet and make welcome new members of the congregation.
2000 Craft & Hobbies Exhibition at which members of our congregation displayed and demonstrated talents
2000 Annual Evening Drive, Groups dining at Willingham Baptist Church An event for elderly people first begun in 1961. This no longer takes place
2000 The Ecumenical Millennium Roadshow Gala on the Common which we assisted in with other local churches. Groups and the stage show.
2000 Church Picnic in Robert Wiseman’s Marquee at Wimbish, hired for his daughter Helen’s wedding the day before.
