Jesus WHY DID HE HAVE TO DIE?
Notes of Sermon preached May 16th 2005 by Andy Paine
“The Cross points to a God who was crucified not between two candlesticks but between two thieves in the Place of the Skull” said JURGEN MOOMANN
The son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many (JESUS)
He knew why he came
He suffered pain and punishment for us, but then many before and since have suffered much pain and for longer duration
His pain was deep rooted spiritual pain
We studied Romans chapter 4 and 5
4 v . 25He was delivered over TO DEATH FOR OUR SINS and was raised TO LIFE FOR OUR JUSTIFICATION.
51Therefore,
since we have been justified through faith, we have
peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom
we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we
rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that
suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And
hope does not disappoint us, because God has
poured out his love into our hearts
by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
What happened to us on the back of Jesus Christ at the Cross
leaves us with the Holy Spirit living in us
OUR SINS and OUR JUSTIFICATION. Two phrases diametrical
opposed to each other
This passage reminds us of 4 conditions of our life
1.OUR PAST CONDITION
2.GOD’S LOVE FOR US
3.CHRIST’S WORK ON OUR BEHALF
4.OUR PRESENT POSITION
1.OUR PAST CONDITION

Romans 5 verse 6, 8, 10 provides us 4 descriptive word
POWERLESS, UNGODLY, SINNERS, ENEMIES concerning our state
of being.
That is how we were. Destined for WRATH, JUDGEMENT, HELL.
Outside of Christ which is the reality of thousands amongst whom we live, of millions in our country and on our planet today.
Many people today expect to turn up in Heaven.
That is Universalism not Christianity.
All going to Heaven is not the way it is.. Not the Reality.
Ephesians 2 v 3 reminds us that by our human nature we are objects of Godly wrath.
Romans 2 v 5 reminds us of our stubbornness, non-repentance and storing up wrath.
Like sheep generation upon generation we have wandered away from God. We are even conceived in sin.,. in that our parents were sinners and had received sin in their own lives.
Isaiah reminds us that “All our righteousness is as thilthy rags”
GOD’s LOVE FOR US
*****************************8
Romans 5 v 8 “Because of God’s love for us”
John 3 v 16
Peter 1 v 20
1 John 3 v 1
Children of God.... That’s what we are. God lavishes upon us more and more an overflowing overwhelming love.
Some one once said “If God made the world He should bear the load of it’s sufferings” The Church points to the Cross and says “He did!”
3 CHRIST’S WORK ON OUR BEHALF
*********************************************
Romans 5 v 8.
******************
Christ died for us people each individual
8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us
Philippians 2 v 8
******************
And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death--
even death on a cross!
Isaiah 53 v 10
****************
Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the LORD makesC his life a guilt offering,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.
John 6 v 38
***************
For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me
Luke 22 v 42
****************
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done
Jesus was obedient unto death , even death on the cross
Jesus insisted on doing the will of God rather than his own will
I have come for them to do the will of Him who sent me.
Not my will, but Thy will be done.
He who was equal with the Father, as God, did not grasp at him
but took upon himself the humble role of a servant,
Hebrews 9 v 22-28
**********************8
22In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
23It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God's presence. 25Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
2nd Corinthians 5 v 21
. 21God made him who had no sin to be sinA for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God
Hebrews 13 v 11-12
11The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering, but the bodies are burned outside the camp. 12And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood
The Cross was the only way to secure the release of humans from sin.
Without the shedding of blood there was no other means to reconcile us to God
Jesus became a sin offering
In Old Testament times before Jesus came, the sins of the people were laid on a bull, a lamb or a pigeon and so transferred to the creature that was then sacrificed,
So that we might be justified, put right with GOD.
Even in the garden of Eden when Adam and eve disobeyed God, and recognised that they were different in appearance God clothed their nakedness, their shame, by killing animals firs
God clothes us in Righteousness
Jesus Christ suffered outside the city gate to make us holy before GOD,
4. OUR PRESENT POSITON
In the Grace in which we now stand
Romans 5 vv 1-10
**********************
v 1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but weC also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
6You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! 10For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
Romans 5 v 1-2
