DAY 8.
######
Read the First letter of John chapter 4 verses 7-19. NIV
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only SonB into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice forC our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God.
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us
Song written by H Bonar, Sing to the tune GOTTLIER
Beloved let us love
Love is of God
In god alone has love
It’s true abode
Beloved, let us love
For those who love
they only, are his children
Born from above
Beloved, let us love
For love is rest
And those who do not love
Abide not blessed.
Beloved, let us love
In love is light
And those who do not love
Live in night
Beloved, let us love
For only then
Shall we behold that God
Who loves us.

The Good News according to Dr Luke, chapter 2 verse 40-52 NIV
And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.
Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom.
After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.
Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you."
"Why were you searching for me?" he asked. "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?" But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
Jesus' Childhood
Luke 2:41
Most Christmas pageants rely heavily on Luke because of his thoroughness in reporting the facts of Jesus' birth. And only Luke recorded the brief glimpses of Jesus' early years given in this chapter. For this reason, many scholars believe Luke must have interviewed Mary, mother of Jesus, during his investigations into Jesus' life.
Song written by E R Conder
Sing to the tune ST CATHERINE
You fair green hills of Galilee
That girdle quiet Nazareth
What glorious vision did you see
When He who conquered sin and death
Your flower filled slopes and summits trod
And grew in grace, with man and God?
We saw no glory crown his head
As childhood ripened into youth;
No angels on his errands sped,
He worked no sign. But meekness, truth
and duty marked each step he trod’
and love to man, and love to God
Jesus! my Saviour, Master, King
Who did for me the burden bear,
While saints in heaven, Your glory sing
Let me on earth Your likeness wear:
Mine be the path Your feet have trod;
Duty and love to man and God
DAY 10.

Read Psalm 19 verses 7 - 14 NIV
The law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving the soul.
The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
The precepts of the LORD are right,
giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the LORD are radiant,
giving light to the eyes.
The fear of the LORD is pure,
enduring forever.
The ordinances of the LORD are sure
and altogether righteous.
They are more precious than gold,
than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
than honey from the comb.
By them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
Who can discern his errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.
Keep your servant also from willful sins;
may they not rule over me.
Then will I be blameless,
innocent of great transgression.
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing in your sight,
LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.
The Names of God
=============
Psalms 19:7-14
After describing the skies as a reflection of God's glory in the first six verses, Psalm 19 switches gears. From the sun, moon, and stars it turns to consider the beauty of God's law. Reflecting that change, the poem in Hebrew uses a different, more personal name for God. The first six verses refer to God with a general name that anyone, of any religion, might use--just like our English word God. But from verse seven on, God is called "the LORD" (a translation of the Hebrew Yahweh)--the personal name God revealed to Moses from the burning bush (Exodus 3:15). The heavens declare the glory of God, but God's law reveals even more--his personal voice to his chosen people. He introduces himself to them by his first name, as it were.
Song written by James Montgomery
To be sung to the tune ST STEPHEN
Your law is perfect Lord of light!
Your testimony sure
The statutes of your realm are right
and your commandments pure
Holy, inviolate, your fear,
Enduring as your throne;
your judgements, chastening or severe
Justice and truth alone.
More prized than gold, - than gold whose waste
Refining fire expels!
Sweeter than honey to my taste –
Than honey from the cells
Let these, O God, my soul convert
And make your servant wise;
Let these be gladness to my heart
The dayspring to my eyes.
So may the words my lips express
The thoughts that throng the mind
Lord, my Strength and Righteousness !
With your acceptance find.
DAY 11.
#######
Read Genesis chapter 28 verses 10-22 NIV
Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran. When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above it stood the LORD, and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.
Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you."
When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it." He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven
Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz.
Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear, so that I return safely to my father's house, then the LORD will be my God and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth."
Song written by Sarah F Adams. Modernised
To be sung to the tune PROPRIOR DEO
Nearer my God to You
Nearer to You;
Even though it is a cross
That raises me
Still all my song would be
Nearer, my God to You
Nearer to You.
Though, like the wanderer
The sun gone down
Darkness is over me
My pillow a stone
Yet in my dreams I’d be
Nearer my God to You
Nearer to you.
There let the way appear
Steps up to Heaven
All that you send to me
In mercy given;
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to You
Nearer to You
Then with my waking thoughts
Bright with your praise
Out of my stony grief
Bethel I’ll raise;
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God to You
Nearer to You
Or if on joyful wing
Cleaving the sky
Sun, moon and stars forgot
Upwards I fly
Still all my song shall be
Nearer, my God to You
Nearer to You

but the LORD rises upon you
and his glory appears over you. You will drink the milk of nations
and be nursed at royal breasts.
Then you will know that I, the LORD, am your Savior,
your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
Instead of bronze I will bring you gold,
and silver in place of iron.
Instead of wood I will bring you bronze,
and iron in place of stones.
I will make peace your governor
and righteousness your ruler.
No longer will violence be heard in your land,
nor ruin or destruction within your borders,
but you will call your walls Salvation
and your gates Praise.
The sun will no more be your light by day,
nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the LORD will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
Your sun will never set again,
and your moon will wane no more;
the LORD will be your everlasting light,
and your days of sorrow will end.
Then will all your people be righteous
and they will possess the land forever.

for the display of my splendor
Song written by William Cowper
To be sung to the tune DEERHURST
Hear what God the Lord has spoken
My people faint and few;
Comfortless, afflicted, broken
Fair abodes I build for you;
Thorns of heartfelt tribulation
Shall no more perplex your ways

And your gates shall all be Praise.
There, like streams that feed the garden
Pleasures without end shall flow;
For the Lord, your faith rewarding,
All his beauty shall bestow;

Never shall you feel oppression,

Read The Good News according to John, chapter 1 verse 1-14 NIV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Song written by John H Newman
To be sung to the tune LUX BENIGNA
Lead, kindly light amid the encircling gloom
You lead me on.
The night is dark and I am far from home
You lead me one
You, keep my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene, one step enough for me.
I was not always so, nor prayed that You
Should lead me on;
I loved to choose, and see my path, but now
You, lead me on:
I loved the flashy day, and, spite of fears
Pride ruled my will: Remember not past years.
So long your power has blessed me, sure it still
will lead me on
O’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till
the night is gone’
and with the morn, those angel faces smile,
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile
DAY 14
######
Read Paul’s letter to the Ephesians chapter 5 verses 1-20 NIV
Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. A Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them.
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:
"Wake up, O sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you."
Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Song written by B Barton
To be sung to the tune ST SAVIOUR
Walk in the light and you shall own
Your darkness passed away
Because that light has on you shone
In which is perfect day.
Walk in the light, and sin, abhorred,
Shall never defile again;
The blood of Jesus Christ your Lord
Shall cleanse from every stain
Walk in the light, and you shall find
your heart made truly his,
Who dwells in cloudless light enshrined
In whom no darkness is.
Walk in the light, so shall you know
That fellowship of love
His Spirit only, can bestow
Who reigns in light above
Walk in the light, and even the tomb
no fearful shade shall wear;
Glory shall chase away it’s gloom
For Christ has conquered there.
Walk in the light, and follow on
Till faith be turned to sight,
Where in divine communion
God is Himself the Light

Walk in the light, and sin, abhorred,
Shall never defile again;
The blood of Jesus Christ your Lord
Shall cleanse from every stain
Walk in the light, and you shall find
your heart made truly his,
Who dwells in cloudless light enshrined
In whom no darkness is.
Walk in the light, so shall you know
That fellowship of love
His Spirit only, can bestow
Who reigns in light above
Walk in the light, and even the tomb
no fearful shade shall wear;
Glory shall chase away it’s gloom
For Christ has conquered there.
Walk in the light, and follow on
Till faith be turned to sight,
Where in divine communion
God is Himself the Light
