Memo about Saffron Walden Co-op Archives. #####################################
I became interested in the history of Saffron Walden Co-op while I was working for them and someone supplied me with a copy of their history published in 1962 to mark their Diamond Jubilee, and while I was at Newport I wrote the history of the Co-op at and around Walden from 1902 - 1976 which was published in the Newport Village Magazine
I began taking photographs of the local Co-op shops and continued doing so until the closure in 1995 including the demolition of the High Street site.
Those are in 5 albums I presented in 1998 to Saffron Walden Town Library.
Howard Newman of James the Jewellers in Church Street Saffron Walden has some further older pictures in black and white
1 of the opening of the original High Street Store near The Greyhound. 2. of the opening of the original Non -Foods Department on the corner of Hill Street and Gold Street some time between 1912 -1915 when it was transferred from the High Street where it began in an extension in 1905. 3. the original house converted to a shop in Castle Street before the new Co-op branch was opened there in 1951
