MADDAMS FAMILY FROM WHENCE WE CAME 1692 - 2013
#####################################
Part One Introduction =================
I have been delving into the history of the Madams/Maddams Family for 35 years with the help of various other members of our scattered clan.
Late 19th century members of the family in Bedfordshire claimed that we descended from a group of French Huguenots and this legend persists in various parts of the country in various forms where outcrops of the family developed. No evidence has so far appeared of the name in any Huguenots records. There is a branch of the family in Cornwall and Kent still using the one “D” spelling which appears to be the earlier version including amongst our ancestors and we have found several instances of the change of spelling over a couple of generations. This Cornwall - Kent group derived from a shipwright in Kent whose family yard was still operating early in the 20th century and the family claim to have arrived in England from Holland.
Since many of the French Huguenots escaped first into Holland this legend could still be true, of members of a household which could have included children or servants or both, who came by boat across the channel who became known as Madam’s (belonging to the household of Madam, a French woman.). The pronunciation of the name in Bedfordshire was said to be Maydarms. May as in Pay and darms as in harms.
What we think is the earliest record of the name is Richardi Maddam who was the father of Agnes Maddam christened at St Stephen’s Church at St Albans on the 8th November -1615 and buried there as “ a poore child”in 1630.
We then have Richardus Meddom who married Mariani Webb 1675 in London They Christened Guilielmus(William) 2-2.1676 named as Richardi & Mariani Meddom, then Elizabeth 21-07-1681 named as Richard and Mary
Another researcher working back from the present day has got as far back but with another branch of the family being the descendants of John Madams born about 1670 buried 1733 who married Ann Pratchett in November 1696 who had 3 children, Anne, Sarah and Joseph. Joseph with his wife Sarah had 7 children one of who was a Richard who also had a son Richard after which use of that Christian name died out
We believe that the two families are linked one or two generations earlier, possibly both children with Richard baptised at Flitwick in April 1688, children of John and Susan Madams of Flitwick Susan died in 1695 and John died in 1701 and that there too lies the link with the Hertfordshire family based early, on Hatfield
Whether this is the path whence we came remains to be seen. Certainly branches of the family appear to have developed in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire from 1615 with other links with London. There are links too between London and Birmingham early in the 19th century. We know too something of how from both cities members of the family moved to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Rhodesia as it was, Tasmania, Singapore and Canada from where it moved into various parts of the USA. There are about 350 Maddams families world wide today but it appears unknown in the rest of Europe. There is data base being built of the family in Canada. The earliest persecution of the Huguenots was in the late 1590’s so a 1615 date, the earliest we are told in Britain for the name, still sounds plausible to the legend..
Regarding The section Referring to 3 William Maddams bp 14.12.1754 and his descendants, for a long time we had previously treated him as dead without issue as his parents had another son christened William at Clophill in 1768
But this is now regarded as an error by the local cleric and we believe should have recorded the birth of James. We have no other record of the birth of James but we certainly know James to have been a son of William and Hannah as he is named in Hannah’s Will as her son, and an executor with his brother Francis.
He is also mentioned as a witness at various weddings and on other local documents and in local history as publican of the “Flying Horse” inn. At one stage he obtained a house for his growing family as there was insufficient room at the Inn. No other brothers are mentioned as benefactors but then neither is James. Hannah had very little to leave, mainly bedding and clothing left to her daughters.
The figures 1a - 1d refer to generations immediately before William and Hannah married at Maulden in 1750. We treat them as 2 and the numbers from there are the generations from them.
Kind regards John Maddams 35 Four Acres Saffron Walden Essex CB11 3JD UK 16.12.2006.

PART 2
Family Tree Part One
Until 2007 we used to begin the official tree with this section
1.William Maddams bp 01.01. 1692 + Mary Dewbury at Harlington married 1714 v 2 Elizabeth Maddams 08.05.1715 name recorded as Madams 2 Mary Maddams bp 04.08.1717 name recorded as Madams + Peter Banks 27.03.1744 2 Ann Maddams bp 27.03.1720 + Joseph Somerford 01.10.1739. #######################################
So this William cannot be as some have alleged the husband of Hannah Parrish who married at Maulden see below
Although we know a William Maddams married Hannah Parrish by special licence he being under 21 we don't know where he came from and over 30 years ago Bedford Record Office searcher claimed that the marriage was on Feb 28th 1749 when in fact having seen the register there were no weddings on that date, and it was a year later in 1750 when Hannah was apparently pregnant as her first daughter arrived 7 months later.
So maybe it was her Dad who insisted on this young man marrying his daughter to save scandle.
So on 28.02.1750.at Maulden, Beds, Hannah Parrish daughter of Francis Parrish of Marston Morteyne married a William Maddams of unknown location who was buried at Clophill on 7th October 1784
However we now speculate that the William who married Hannah may have come from the next village south of Maulden which is Flitton
The information for this family is accurate even if it's position at this point cannot yet be confirmed

PART 3 Family Tree UPDATED April 29th 2009 ==================================
Concerning The Family of James of line 3 son of William and Hannah who was named as Executor of Hannah's Will but of whom we have no birth, baptism, death or burial record, but was ale house assistant and later Inn Keeper of "The Flying Horse" Inn Clophill one of whose sons. William, took on the job when James died.
James is mentioned as providing drink for the street party to celebrate the Battle of Waterloo and as buying a house to accomodate his frowing family, and in various legal documents, and as witness at various weddings,
JAMES MADDAMS of the FLYING HORSE. =================================== Over the years a lot of researchers have puzzled over James the son of William and Hannah Maddams. who is mentioned in Hannah’s will. He is known to have been “ ale seller” at and later “publican” of the “Flying Horse” inn at Clophill and appears as such as a witness at weddings, in historical records and deeds, and as executor with his brother Francis of his mother’s will
BUT we have no record of his birth or his burial but down the years we have found cases of men known in their families as John being Christened James, and of James being Christened as John.
As to William and Hannah’s son John born in 1760 bp in 1761 Clophill Parish records state there was a John buried at Clophill in November 9th 1846 given as “publican” in his 79th year. This could not have been John born in 1760 but could be their son William born in 1768 when the older son William was apparently still alive aged 14.
The Clophill burial register records that on April 9th 1846 James Maddams was buried aged 56. If that is a misread of 86 it could have been William and Hannah’s son John born 1760 and in life known as James.
The Clophill burial register records Nov 9th 1846 John Maddams was buried in his 79th year stated as being “publican”. If the cleric entered these names at the end of that year and had misplaced the Christian names of these two that is one other explanation
Therefore John, the son of Francis and Mary born in 1790 baptised 15.02.1791, that year would have been 56 and James in his 79th year would fit the William recorded as born in Jan 1768, bp in 1768.
Also if the John of 1760 died, a new son could be so called who in life preferred to be known as James in the same way as many John’s today are called Jack because Jack is the diminutive of John, the common nick name of a John, which stems from Jacques the French word for James. James in Latin is Jacobus and in Greek Jakobos.
CR Experts and Researchers now call the William of 1768 James John Maddams born in Jan 1768 mistakenly baptised in Feb 1768 as William and buried at Clophill as John Maddams, the publican, in 1846 in his 79th year. whose second wife Mary lived on at the “Flying Horse” until her death in 1851?
