GREETINGS THIS AND EVERY EASTER
########################
Each year for several decades Christians in Saffron Walden have participated in a Good Friday Procession from the War Memorial to the Market Place to the Parish Church
Some churches may have services earlier in the morning, and there is one at the Baptist Church at 9.30am
Then the March commences outside the Baptist Church next to the War Memorial at 10.30am
The procession then follows a Cross. For many years this was a large one made by a local carpenter and now a smaller cross is in use as that one fell to pieces after much use.
There is a short stop on the Common [ Until 2007 it was in the Market Place near where the old Market Cross used to be, ] where the Bible account of Good Friday is read, prayers are said and a hymn sung and then the procession moves to the nave of St Mary’s Parish Church where Walden people have worshipped for centuries and before them is another cross high up above the choir screen with the figure of Jesus the Christ, the son of God, crucified.
There is then a closing Act of Worship and the crowd disperses for hot cross buns. Then some of them stay for a 3 hour service of meditation and reflection upon what happened on that most solemn day in the human history of our planet. The day God sacrificed himself to rescue us humans from ourselves, and provide us access to Heaven.
There was no other good enough to pay the price of Sin
He only could unlock the gates of Heaven to let us in
THE MEANING OF THE CROSS.
The cross it takes our sins away. Yours. Mine. Everyone’s What is sin? Any thing that hurts my fellow humans, Anything that springs from my own personal selfishness, Anything wrong I am responsible for. Add that to what everyone else is responsible for, and the legacy of the sins and failures of the millions who have lived and died before we got here and we get a huge international mess. This accounts for all that is evil in our world. Humanly speaking there is no solution.
We all share it to some extent and we all suffer the consequences. Sometimes we call it man’s inhumanity to man. Humans are flawed. Everyone of us
We all need to be forgiven and we all need go learn to and exercise forgiveness to those who wrong us. God created humans to live in harmony with one another and fulfil His purpose for this planet. Alas we have all
contributed to a failure of his plan but through the life, example and teaching of Jesus Christ, God has shown us how to live with every one else and then to correct our flaws, mend our faults, eliminate our sins while saving us.
God achieved that by allowing Jesus Christ to suffer the agony of a severe whipping of his body that shredded his skin, laid bare his flesh, caused great loss of blood and much pain, and then allowed him to be nailed to a wooden cross through his hands
and feet and hung out to die. So the greatest man who ever lived died to rescue us and reconcile us with God our Creator, Father, Owner and Friend.
BUT THAT WAS NOT THE END OF THE STORY
This same Jesus Christ, God raised from the dead and gave him new life and he appeared to his many friends for the next 6 weeks before leaving this planet promising one day long years into the future that he would return and when that happens he will rule the whole world and every nation and tribe and people will obey him and fulfil God’s plan.
His defeat of the power of death was proof that life continues beyond the death of our human bodies, and can exist without them in other forms and places.
Jesus lives on with God the father, and His Holy Spirit who has been sent to Earth to live within all who trust and serve God and accompany them to Heaven when they die. That should and can include all of us including you.
Jesus died for you Jesus rose from death for you Jesus lives for you
What will you do for Him? Will you accept his offer, trust him and live your life to please him, serve him, and share with him in his plans for the world and the future.?
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son
I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life
