Arthur Rank Centre [ARC]
********************
Serving the rural community and their churches.
The Arthur Rank Centre at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, was conceived as offering
Christian chaplaincy and critique to the world of agriculture.
It is a partnership between the national Churches, the Royal Agricultural Society of England and the Rank Foundation and is the base from which the Baptist, Church of England and United Reformed/ Methodist Rural Officers operate. ARC, in seeking to
serve rural communities and their churches, practises and advocates partnership
ecumenically and with all appropriate official and voluntary bodies.
Many ARC initiatives have become free-standing, eg Arthur Rank Training Centre
[providing training for disaffected school leavers], Rural Stress Information Network
see below] and Farmers' World network. Farm Crisis Network offers trained and knowledgeable
people to 'walk with' farmers in difficulties [see below]
The ARC/Addington Fund
Director: Ian Bell
This fund dispensed over £10m to more than 22,000 applicants in the
Foot and Mouth crisis both sensitively and rapidly.
It now addresses specific rural housing needs, enabling rural business people to exit
their business with dignity and continue to live in their locality.
ARC encourages rural enterprise. Current projects include "Computers for Rural People",
and a similar "ARC Furniture Scheme". "Hidden Britain Centres" is being piloted in
Cumbria as a significant tourism rural regeneration initiative and ARC seeks to' roll this out
much more widely.
Eco-Congregation in England passes from ENCAMS, the environmental charity who developed
the project, to the Arthur Rank Centre with effect from 1st April 2004.
Following the conclusion of the time-limited support from Defra, The Arthur Rank Centre and
Eco-Congregation are delighted to report that core funding has been given by the Methodist
Relief and Development Fund which enables the project to continue.
Further funding is sought to enable the project to operate more effectively.
A new website www.ecocongregation.org has full information about the project
[from 1st May 2004 for downloadable resources]
The Rev'd David Pickering, the Eco-Congregation Co-ordinator returns to ministry with the
the United Reformed Church.
Co-ordinator [part-time]: Jo Rathbone

Association of Centres of Adult Theological Education [ACATE] [in association with CTBI and CTE]
*******************************************
ACATE brings together many different constituencies: colleges,
courses, universities departments, denominational bodies and individual
practitioners from the field of theological education.
Some constituencies emphasize a more formal 'academic' approach;
other emphasis experiential methods of learning.
Each has its own special areas of interest and expertise from among
a plethora of contemporary concerns and issues, and the vitality of the
Association firmly depends on sustaining a creative inter-action
across the widest possible spectrum

Head of Church Relations
Rev'd Dr David Spriggs
Churches Together in Britain and Ireland [CTBI] and Bible Society jointly launched the ecumenical study material for Lent 2004. For Bible Society it was a first
- their first joint production of a Lent course. Called Face to Face, this booklet,
intended primarily as a resource for small groups, can, of course, be used at
other times of the year. For Bible Society this is one of many ways in which they were celebrating their bicentenary in 2004.
Appropriately, the 2004 Ecumenical Course was based more firmly on the Bible.
Passages from the opening chapters of the Gospel according to St Luke form the focus.
These are, however, studied from an intriguing angle, exploring the concept that we are
all made in the image of a God and called, during our life, to grow more fully into God's image
and likeness.
CTBI itself published in July a book of essays entitled 'Growing into God' which explores some
of the issues in greater depth.
Bible Society is hosting additional web-based resources to supplement the main Lent material.
It will include resources for children and young people and will be available at www.lent2004.org.uk

Association of Centres of Adult Theological Education [ACATE] [in association with CTBI and CTE]
*******************************************
ACATE brings together many different constituencies: colleges,
courses, universities departments, denominational bodies and individual
practitioners from the field of theological education.
Some constituencies emphasize a more formal 'academic' approach;
other emphasis experiential methods of learning.
